CHALLENGE

Many people are reminiscent about the home they grew up in. John Deterding went one better: He bought the vacant and abandoned home of his youth and embarked on a major renovation and expansion for new generations.

SOLUTION

The family home feels smaller when you’re all grown up. So, together with the architect Jack Streigel, John began at the bones of the structure and opened up the space to create an extraordinary new home with dramatic views.

RESULT

A new family now enjoys John’s childhood home, a dramatically different place from the one remembered by the Deterding siblings — with spacious rooms, beautiful vistas and an infinity pool overlooking Ancil Hoffman Park and Golf Course.
